Helen is aghast when she starts to suspect her late husband Connor has returned to haunt her. The nightmares are bad enough, but when the heart rate monitor he was wearing in her dream turns up in real life she starts to get really nervous — one ghost is quite enough, surely!

Meanwhile, psychic medium Bryan Abbot is in town to do a series of shows and Helen's not the only one interested in attending. Jess has lost Lorraine, a chicken that adopted her after Heaven died. Jess knows it's silly, but her mum always said she'd like to come back as a chicken. Now that Lorraine is gone, Jess is feeling the loss of her mum more keenly. Jack thinks Abbot's a fraud but sees an opportunity to be a father to Jess and offers to go with her.

After some manoeuvring by Ellie, Toby takes Matt out trail bike riding with the Watts brothers, Dougie and Barry. Toby gets considerable pleasure watching Matt fall off as he attempts to learn to ride but then feels guilty when Dougie calls him on his bad behaviour. Toby gives Matt a proper lesson and they take the first step towards mending their rift.

At the psychic show, Jess gets her hopes up when Abbot receives a message about a recipe. Jess has been craving her mum's comfort food, dahl, but she never learnt how to make it. However, the message is from someone else's mother and Jess watches wistfully as the young woman dissolves into tears.

Then Helen sees an assistant with a clipboard communicating via a headset and realises Abbot is being fed information. Incensed at this duplicity, she rises to her feet, determined to debunk him publicly. But then she looks at Jess, aching to connect once more with her mum, and at the hopeful faces of the audience and she can't bring herself to go through with it.

Later that night, Jess helps Natalie cook dinner and is surprised when a jar of coriander falls out of the cupboard right into her hands. It's Heaven's secret ingredient for dahl. That same night Helen realises her Connor dreams have stopped. Outside, Rusty buries the mysterious heart rate monitor and it seems Connor is finally gone.

The next morning Jack takes Jess up in a hot-air balloon and together they cast Heaven's ashes over The Alice. Meanwhile, Bryan Abbot, out for a morning jog, has met Helen, who takes this opportunity to finally tell him what a phony he is.

Moments later, he is conked on the head by the empty urn that had contained Heaven's ashes. The Alice has got its own back.
