Episode 7.1

After agreeing not to rush into anything, Adam and his landlady Tina are now nine months into their relationship, and still taking it one day at a time. But when Adam lands a new job at a trendy dotcom firm, it encourages him to reassess his priorities. The average age of his colleagues reminds him that he is not getting any younger, so he decides he and Tina should take the next step, but she may not be on the same page. Karen's new publishing house is up and running, and she throws a lavish party to celebrate the launch of the business, and her author's debut novel. As she commits all her energy to her dream venture, her friends and family take a backseat. Jenny and Pete struggle as the demands of work and family drag them in opposite directions. David is feeling dissatisfied with his life. Bored with his tedious work selling insurance to unsuspecting pensioners, he is delighted when he is given a way into the lucrative Cheshire set by his client Nikki. David attempts to impress Nikki, but is it for business or pleasure?

When Adam suggests to Tina that they would create great children, she is caught off-guard and suggests Adam would make a better granddad than dad. As Adam tries to convince himself to drop the idea of children, Tina feels torn about what she really wants. At work, Adam and his familiar-looking colleague realise why they recognise each other, and decide to keep their distance. Back home, Matt has a shocking piece of news for Adam. Karen meets Justin's representative, and polar opposite, Benjamin Stevens. His concerns over the health of the business cause Karen to put pressure on her star author Bridie. Pete arranges a tea dance at the care home, and Adam and David receive some sage advice in return for their fancy footwork. David decides that if he wants to keep up with a woman like Nikki, he will need a makeover. Jenny revels in her newfound power at work and inadvertently suggests firing some of her colleagues. Pete is horrified when he discovers she is doing the dirty work and choosing which of her workmates will get fired. As Jenny begins to spout business jargon at home, her new persona drives a wedge between them.

Matt's revelation puts a dampener on Adam and Tina's baby making plans. Adam tries to help his son with his predicament but is unprepared for Matt's choice. Karen and David deal with a family crisis. As Karen turns her back on the business to deal with the situation, Benjamin may be making some plans of his own. Nikki's husband George has become convinced that she and David are having an affair. To evade George's suspicions, David concocts a story about providing financial advice for Nikki's nail-bar business. David goes for a drink with Robyn and receives unwelcome news. The Gifford's are also having some family problems. Jenny's mum Barbara has gone missing. Jenny is not too concerned but her sister Sheila is — but Sheila knows their mother well, unlike Jenny who never visits. As day turns into night and there is still no sign of Barbara, Jenny and Pete become worried. Has Jenny been a terrible daughter, and is there anything she could have done? And just where has Barbara gone?

Adam is shocked when graphic material featuring Tina appears online. Tina is devastated and whilst Adam comforts her, he cannot help but take matters into his own hands. Seeking revenge, he tracks down Tina's ex-partner Jamie. Adam confides in his work friend Sarah (Amy Huberman), who also happens to be Jamie's wife. Despite their complicated connection, they are growing close and she is a welcome distraction from all the drama in Adam's life — but Adam cannot work out how to tell Tina about their friendship. The situation is then made worse by a revelation from Sarah. With David's help, Karen takes on Benjamin, but their efforts are not enough and Karen needs to quickly find enough cash to save her venture. David tries to persuade Nikki to leave her husband, George, but she is backed into a corner — can David be her white Knight too? Tensions flare in the Gifford household, as Pete and Jenny try to adjust to their new house guest.

Adam and Tina's relationship is strained and the pair are struggling to mend the rift. When Adam is offered a night away with work he jumps at the chance and his colleague Sarah encourages him to leave his worries — and his conscience — behind. Home alone, Matt decides to throw a party, but it is not long before things get out of hand. Pete and Jenny disagree over young Adam's future when they attend a university open day. Pete thinks degree is a waste of time if Adam wants to be a musician, but Jenny feels she has wasted her potential and doesn't want her son to do the same. But will it just be Adam who is inspired by their trip to university? David offers to help a vulnerable Nikki to squirrel some of George's money away — but George is no fool. Karen is not enjoying sharing her business with two not-so-silent partners. At home, things are no better as the twins join forces against her. After the pressures of the last few months and feeling like the walls are closing in on her, Karen needs help more than ever.

After a rendezvous with Sarah in the stationery cupboard, Adam gets an offer he really should refuse. Karen's professional and personal lives both seem to be back on track. She is flattered when attractive and well-read builder Gareth asks her out on a date. Tina and Jenny go along to supervise from a distance, in case Gareth is not who he seems. The date goes well, but is Gareth the real deal? Jenny is taking more pride in her appearance and is starting to see Pete in a different light, and she vents her frustrations to him. When Barbara orchestrates a romantic meal, Pete reveals his big plan to Jenny. However, Jenny has plans of her own. George asks David to find out who Nikki has left him for. Tina puts Adam's recent affectionate behaviour down to fears about old age and they continue to try for a baby. Adam's 50th birthday is approaching but, with so much going on in his life, Adam is not in the party mood. Pete suggests they have a joint celebration, and Jenny and Tina arrange a night away for the whole gang. When they all get together, it soon become clear that the night is not going to run smoothly.

Reeling from the revelation that Adam has cheated, Tina arranges a rendezvous with Sarah to hear her side of the story. Karen's feelings for Gareth are tested when she discovers that he has kept a big part of his life from her, while David takes matters into his own hands after a threat is made towards his daughters. Although in no position to do so, Adam offers Pete some relationship advice — with disastrous consequences.
