Episode 3.1

David and Karen arrive home from the hospital with twin daughters—Ellie and Olivia. However all is not well as Josh feels jealous and David reverts to his old ways by throwing himself into his work and neglecting his parental duties. Having returned from her vacation with Adam to find Pete starkers on the sofa with their lounge resembling a bomb site. Rachel loses patience with his ways and asks Adam to get him to leave. Karen's mother, Heather, arrives at the Marsden household under the pretense of assisting with the new arrivals. However her fondness for the odd sherry or four causes Karen to worry—and her revelation that she's left Karen's father only serves to make things worse. Jenny, now a single woman, has the unenviable task of returning to work in order to keep a roof over her and little Adam's heads. Her first job is at a funeral parlour but she doesn't last long as she can't stop herself from mentioning death. Josh feels jealous of the new twins and after a scary incident, he's sent to stay with Adam and Rachel. With nowhere else to go, Pete convinces Jenny to let him move in with her as a lodger. For Pete he's one step closer to getting back together with Jenny but she's moving on, meeting internet millionaire Robert Brown at Karen and David's dinner party. After returning Josh to his parents, with somewhat less hair thanks to his ecounter with an elevctirc razor, Adam and Rachel both admit that they would like to start a family.

Rachel and Adam begin their fertility treatment. At David's 40th birthday party, Jenny shows up with Robert after their trip to New York, while Pete indulges in some dramatic dancing with his date, Ramona. Meanwhile, David has taken up Karen's suggestion that he gets involved in a campaign against a playground closure being run by the determined Jessica. Pete takes a while to realise that his new landlord is gay.

Pete is roped into playing five-a-side football for a gay team but he is sent off when he's spotted kissing Ramona. He then spends the night with her, causing friction with her employer David in the morning. Rachel and Adam have to deal with the consequences when their first attempt at fertility treatment fails. Karen meets an old flame, artist Miles Brodie. Jenny allows Robert to stay for the first time.

David is unfaithful to Karen after a lunchtime date with political activist Jessica, while Pete realises he has been misled when he makes a date with a someone he meets in an internet chatroom. She turns out to be just 12—but he ends up with the girl's teacher, Emma Keaton, instead.

When the girls play a drunken game of truth-or-dare during Rachel's hen weekend at a health farm, Jenny distresses the bride-to-be be revealing she kissed Adam The stag party travels to Adam's native Belfast where he is reunited with his first love Jane Fitzpatrick and Pete finds out about David's infidelity.

Adam wants a simple wedding; Rachel wants it to be opulent. There problems worsen when Rachel loses the ugly engagement ring Adam has bought her. While dining illicitly with Jessica, David spots Robert with another woman. He agrees not to say anything, but Robert decides to split with Jenny just in case. Meanwhile, Pete's relationship with teacher Emma Keaton is going so well he asks Jenny for a divorce.

Best man Pete's speech at Adam and Rachel's wedding reception doesn't go down very well when he mentions her ex-husband, someone who Rachel's parents never knew about. News of David's secret affair spreads to everyone, except Karen. Pete breaks off his relationship with Emma, realising Jenny is the woman he wants.
