When Adam and Rachel battle with who should stay at whose place, Pete and Jenny suggest that they should move in together. However, Adam is reluctant to make such a commitment and instead suggests "cloning their wardrobes". David and Karen continue their domestic bickering despite the fact Karen now has a nanny. Josh's behaviour in school indicates a sibling may be beneficial but Karen's not ready for that. Pete and Jenny are poles apart when it comes to the imminent birth of their first child. As Pete becomes a sponge for knowledge, Jenny's nuturing instincts are not easily brought forth. Despite Pete's relentless planning and organising, when it comes time for the birth, Pete is nowhere to be found.

Rachel and Adam find a new home and move in together, but when they unpack, Adam finds Rachel's marriage certificate and discovers she's still married—and his insistance that she get a divorce only steels her resolve not to. To make matters worse, when her husband turns up, Adam sees that he's everything that he is not. Karen takes over the household finances after David invests unwisely. Meanwhile, for Pete and Jenny, sleep becomes a distant memory with baby Adam taking over their lives.

David confides in Adam when his sex life goes downhill and before too long everyone is having cold feet in the bedroom—David is convinced that he's impotent; Rachel and Adam are paranoid about their performance in bed; Pete waits patiently for Jenny to be willing but he then finds sex isn't the same since his partner has become a mother. David seeks professional help to get him back on the road to recovery.

Karen is offered a job to edit a new novel by prize-winning author Alex Welcht. A sequence of events leads Ramona to assume she is having an affair and David's reaction is one of revenge. Meanwhile, Pete finds it a strain having his parents stay. Adam is inspired to have another go at writing a novel.

Things don't seem to be going well for Adam and Rachel—she hates his childlike antics and he has suddenly noticed the glamorous new neighbour. Meanwhile, Karen and David decide to get professional help after each has adulterous yearnings, and Jenny and Pete discover that the baby leaves them no time for anything else.
