When a witness claims to have seen Mandy dispose of the knife that killed Jasper, Mandy faces murder charges. Martin continues to hunt for the true culprit, uncovering more darkness in Port Silver, but no murderer. Jasper’s mother Densie holds a vigil for Jasper at Hummingbird Beach which ends in a mass poisoning, with Mandy one of the victims.

Under mounting police pressure and media scrutiny, Mandy is accused of Jasper’s murder, frustrating Martin and stirring up self-doubt. With all his leads becoming red herrings Martin confides in Vern and Josie but still avoids reconciling his past. His questioning turns a corner when he discovers an extortion plot involving Jasper’s boss Tyson and, when he learns Tyson has his own grandiose plans to buy and develop Hummingbird Beach, Martin wonders if Tyson is involved in Jasper’s murder. Martin finds an alibi witness for Mandy but she is released from custody into a media frenzy, all focussed on “the Black Widow of Riversend.” Meanwhile, Jasper’s mother Densie and aunt Jay Jay arrange a memorial service at Hummingbird Beach Retreat but tragedy strikes when dozens of people are poisoned, including Mandy. As Martin waits desperately for Mandy to recover, Doug reveals to Martin that missing Amory Ashton was in partnership with someone connected to Hummingbird Beach, convincing Martin that there is a link between Hummingbird Beach, Ashton and Jasper’s deaths and the poisonings.
