Martin Scarden has returned to his coastal hometown, Port Silver, to set up a new life with partner Mandy Bond. When he arrives to find his childhood friend Jasper brutally murdered and Mandy the prime suspect, Martin makes it his duty to find the real murderer and absolve Mandy. In the process, he confronts hidden truths about Port Silver and himself.

At the tail end of his book tour about his latest true crime case in Riversend, international crime journalist Martin Scardsden finds himself reluctantly drawn back to his hometown, Port Silver, for a much-needed holiday with his partner Mandy Bond, who is waiting for him to join her. En route, he’s surprised by a phone call from childhood friend Jasper Speight who wants to see him urgently, but when Martin arrives at Jasper’s house soon after, he finds Jasper dead, fatally stabbed, and Mandy by his side, covered in blood, with no memory of what happened and a knife in her hand. Detective Scotty Waalij, the third member of Martin’s estranged childhood trio, starts leading an investigation but with no other leads Scotty’s suspicion remains on Mandy. Martin sets out to retrace Mandy and Jasper’s last night at nearby Hummingbird Beach Retreat, while struggling with hidden questions about Mandy’s relationship with his old friend, and how she came to be the only suspect in his murder.
