There is controversy at the track when old nag Crown Castle surprisingly sweeps the field, robbing bookies of a considerable sum. Punters believe a team of crooked horse dealers have sneakily swapped it for a better, similar looking horse. Rob Griffin is on the case but is upset when he is teamed with Clyde Martin — an experienced prosecutor, but a serious drinker. Things immediately get off to a bad start when it is pointed out that Clyde is looking to light-up next to a No Smoking sign, prompting Clyde to reply, "I once saw a sign that said ’Wear Playtex Bras’, and I paid no attention to that either!" But Clyde manages to charm the judge and jury and things are looking positive as his star eight-year old witness shines in the box. But after one too many, Clyde manages to land himself in deep water regarding a former case of Rob’s involving Mal Hennessey.

Meanwhile, Steve Hennessey is still on the run. However, Kenny, a small-time crook and criminal colleague of Steve’s, is facing an attempted murder charge after a bank job went wrong and he wants to make a deal with the cops. Kenny used to use the Hennesseys’ safe house whenever the heat "got a bit tropical" and he is sure that is where Steve is hiding now and offers Peter Faithful the address as part of a plea bargain. At first Vic is reluctant to downscale the charges against Kenny but Peter convinces him that Kenny is only small fry — Steve’s the big fish. The undercover cops enter the hideaway and spy Steve in the corner.
