In the small town of Yoorana, six people emerge from their graves. When Sergeant James Hayes is called to investigate he discovers them naked, dirty and disoriented. He calls Doctor Elishia McKellar who takes them back to her surgery for examination. At the surgery, Elishia tends to them whilst James tries to find out who they are.

It's the morning after, and everyone is laying low at Elishia's surgery, struggling to remember who they are and what happened to them. Meanwhile in town, Irishman Paddy is happily breaking into a shop while, at the local high school, the last to emerge and dangerous "John Doe" is on the loose and roaming the corridors. James confirms that the group have all risen from the dead and Kate gets an unexpected surprise when she goes back home.

Vic is behaving strangely after having had a serious car accident and is clearly even more determined to find the group. James is urgently trying to track down where Elishia is hiding them while continuing to investigate who they are and why they've come back. James relies on Maria to take him to Elishia's hideout, while Elishia uses Charlie to test the boundary around Yoorana, looking for a safe way out of town.

Bored at the hideout, teenager Kirstie recklessly leads Charlie to a wild paddock party that has started up near the property. Kirstie drinks and flirts and wanders off with a boy, trying to recapture the life of a normal teenager. Charlie worries for her and, when she disappears from his view, he runs to find James for help. They locate a visibly shaken Kirstie by the lake — she now remembers she was murdered. Vic finds Maria and convinces her to take him to the group.

Sarah, James and Kate try to navigate their complex love triangle, grappling with a mixture of anger, grief and relief. Meanwhile, Charlie and Kirstie decide to seek answers about Charlie's past. They are led to The Royal Hotel where Charlie encounters Russell, a strange World War I buff, who is stunned at Charlie's resemblance to one of the town's famed WW1 heroes. Charlie is privately confused to hear he is regarded in this light and fudges that he is simply a 'relation' of this renowned Anzac hero.

The group comes to terms with Maria's murder whilst they try to decide what to do about Vic who was injured during the chase. Elishia wants to let him die but James wants answers from him and he convinces Elishia to operate on Vic's leg. James and John are growing suspicious of Elishia after Vic accused her of knowing more than she was letting on.
