Herb gets the chance to fulfill his dream when he's invited to become the third string in Garrick Graham's morning radio show. Everyone is supportive and enjoys listening to him, particularly when he holds his own against Garrick's fiery humour. But Herb is being stretched outside his comfort zone and finds himself spilling stories on his friends that they'd rather he not share.

Meanwhile Chai Li sees her upcoming work trip to Cambodia as the perfect opportunity to go to Vietnam and look for her birth mother. Her boss Ewan is supportive and helps her research Operation Babylift and then offers to go with her.

An unexpected encounter with a young comic takes Caroline on an adventure that both excites and rattles her. At the same time, she and Matt trawl through their emotional baggage as they undertake mediation to work on a custody arrangement for Carmody.

Being a parent is a hard slog. For Matt, a few days with Carmody is far from smooth sailing when he has to take care of his son and his star AFL player at the same time.

Caroline, while basking in the attention of her young lover, can't avoid feeling alone when Carmody is away with Matt. Childless Chai Li is keen to start a family and asks her friend Ewan if he's 'hypothetically' consider being a sperm donor.

Bernadette finds herself leading a motley group of school kids in rehearsals for a school concert. The song she chooses is unpopular and the kids make their disenchantment clear when they do a parody of it. She requests help from Luce, however he's reluctant to add 'teacher' to his CV and thinks it's the first step to giving up as a musician. When he sees her struggling, he realises it's time to stop thinking about himself and help the woman he loves. Encouraging the kids to write their own words, they both realise it's tapping into hidden skills.

Chai Li and Herb create tension as they argue over what he perceives as her insensitivity towards Rosa when she talks about returning to Vietnam.

And Matt and Caroline reach a new point in their relationship when they have an open discussion about their marriage breakdown that is a cathartic release for them both.

Herb and Chai Li continue to dance around their growing attraction, causing tension in the family when Luce steps in and plays protective brother.

Bernadette contemplates her mortality after being advised to take a gene test because of her family history of breast cancer. She finds it hard to decide if she should do the test or not; wondering what sort of life a positive result may bring. Luce understands it's her decision but thinks she should take the test.

Matt and Caroline spend time together as they try to clear his AFL client, Lachie, of dangerous driving charges after he was involved in an accident. Caroline confronts Matt with something that's been playing on her mind.

One year celebrations are held at the Wise Crack where Herb makes a special announcement and Caroline realises she truly is part of the Tivolli family.

And, things finally come together for Luce who receives a welcome windfall for the rights to one of his songs.
