Josh is surprised to find he's living in a romcom. Despite grand romantic gestures, elaborate dates and barely-edible vegetarian meals, he still can't seem to win Arnold over. At Arnold's birthday party, Josh, Tom and Hannah finally get to meet Arnold's rich and unexpectedly charming parents. Dad wanders around Josh's house like a lost soul as he tries to deal with Mae's revelation. Mum is surprised to hear from her psychiatric hospital suitor, Stuart. Tom receives an unsettling offer from the boss he fooled around with, and some advice from Arnold's father, as they become firm friends. When Arnold finally summons up the courage to make his big coming out announcement, things do not go quite as expected.

Josh, Tom and Arnold decide that they're young, they're hot, and it's time to experiment with MDMA. Arnold's anxiety about what might happen disappears when the drugs come on and the trio decides to head to a nightclub. They meet a free-spirited girl called Ella, who convinces them to go for a run in the night that ends up with a kiss, an ambulance ride and Tom in a hospital emergency room. As they wait for Tom to be patched up, Josh and Arnold convince Ella to dump her boyfriend, while phone calls from Dad and Mae reveal that Dad has also been dumped.

Josh, Arnold, Tom and Ella wake up to the foggy morning after their big night out. As dawn breaks, Claire arrives back from Berlin, and the crowing from the backyard makes everyone finally admit that Adele the chicken is actually a rooster. They discuss the options. All are bleak for Adele. Ella, who seems to have moved in with Tom, suggests they cook Adele as a welcome-home dinner for Claire. Vegetarian Arnold is not keen and carnivore Tom is horrified. Josh tries to be brave. In the middle of all this, Arnold proposes the idea of an open relationship to Josh.
