Old Friends - New Enemies

Episode 2.01

After living an unsettled life following their father's jobs, Steve and Tamara Henderson have finally settled down in the seaside suburb of Westport. Tam has trouble fitting in at the new school, especially with tough-girl Carol who challenges Tam to a 'test' — to climb to the crows nest at top of a ship's mast. The girls are stopped by the arrival of the local cop, Javorsky. Diverted to trouble at the milk bar, Tam is surprised to see Brains being bullied by a gang of local kids — the Brown Street Boys. Wal is troubled by a job he's given by Harry, his business partner. Steve takes an interest in a Vietnamese girl.

Hoping to keep the girls out of any further trouble, Javorsky takes Tam and Carol to the youth centre. Tam's busy afternoon prevents her from picking up Sally Marshall from school getting her in trouble with the girl's mother, Helen. Brains tells Steve his family moved to Westport so father could work in abattoir after his butcher shop in Haven Bay was forced to close by the arrival of a new supermarket. After an argument with Harry over a job, Wal lashes out at Tam. Brains is chased by Brown Street Boys. Carol challenges Tam to another test, this time at an abandoned industrial site but the test ends when Carol is menaced by an aggressive guard dog. Tam helps Carol escape and the two agree to become friends. Steve continues his pursuit of Ahn. Steve and Tam return to an empty house — Wal is gone, leaving nothing but a letter. He's walked out on them again.

The Hand On Your Shoulder

Episode 2.02

Unable to contact Mike who is in India on a second honeymoon with Pat, Steve and Tam decide to try and cope on their own but quickly discover money is going to be tight — and the bills are already starting to come in. Steve stresses to Tam the importance of not telling anyone that Wal has left but young next door neighbour Sally realises something is amiss at the worst possible moment, right when Wal's evasive business partner Harry comes looking for him. Still being chased to school by the Brown Street Boys, Brains targets Vinnie for his revenge. Desperate for food, Tam is caught shoplifting.

Tam keeps quiet when questioned by the police but it only results in her being taken to a remand centre. Concerned when Tam doesn't come home, Steve goes to Sally's mum Helen for help. At the police station, Helen realises something wrong and Steve comes clean about Wal leaving. Steve and Helen visit Tam the next day but its too late, she has to appear in children's court and it'll be up to a Magistrate if she can go home. Meanwhile, rumours about Tam's arrest are making their way around school. Tam is released and the charges are dropped on a promise of good behaviour. Needing money, Steve goes to see Harry about the money his father invested in the business but Harry tells him the money is tied up in the business. Steve tells Harry the truth and Harry gives him some money but insists he be informed immediately if Wal gets in contact with him. After their talk, Steve realises Harry can't be trusted and tells Tam he has decided to leave school and get a job. They are interrupted by a prowler outside the house. Unbeknownst to the kids, the house is being watched by Harry and another man.

Fight To Survive

Episode 2.03

The Brown Street Boys continue to hassle Brains, taking his pocket knife. Steve goes to Harry in hopes of a getting a job but Harry turns him down and reiterates importance of finding Wal. Marty gives Brains some tips on avoiding the Brown Street Boys but his complex directions only get him into more trouble. Steve gets a job selling books door-to-door. Carol stands up to Mick and gets Brains' knife back. Tam brings home food from the school's domestic science class. When the Brown Street Boys then take over the youth centre and the fort, Tam declares war.

Tam and her friends strike back at the Brown Street Boys. Steve doesn't like being told he'll have to wait his job earnings, not to mention the mounting fees, and quits. Steve and Tam are plagued by mysterious phone calls and come home from school to find the house ransacked. Wal finally makes contact, phoning in the middle of the night. He warns the kids to stay away from Harry and asks Steve to destroy his trucking log book — the one item stolen during the robbery. Realising that Harry has the log book, Tam's friends create a distraction allowing her to sneak into Harry's office to get a look at it. She is forced to hide when Harry returns but overhears him on the phone — Harry is watching the kids and will get Wal when he comes back. Steve isn't happy to learn about Tam's risky actions but she has discovered the log book isn't accurate. Harry a crook, but just what is he up to? Tam meets with Vinnie to ask for a truce but the meeting ends when Brains accidentally knocks over Brown Street Boys' bikes. They chase him to the docks and Brains falls in the water. He doesn't resurface.

Vinnie dives into the water to rescue Brains. Afterwards, both sides agree to a truce and Ron announces a party at the youth centre to celebrate. Sally's ink-bomb prank proves costly when Miranda's mother demands she pay for a new dress, prompting the kids to scramble to raise the money. Realising Carol likes Vinnie, Tam encourages her friend to try her luck, but Carol doesn't think Vinnie would give her a second look. Steve begins his new office job but despite it not being what he expected, he tries to make the most of it. Unfortunately, his initiative isn't appreciated by everyone. Ahn's father agrees to let Steve and Ahn go out together on a group date but Steve is conflicted when his new co-workers invite hm out for drinks.

Steve misses his date with Ahn when he arrives late — and drunk. Steve's co-worker Nick takes credit for Steve's work. When Steve complains, he discovers Nick has already made a complaint to the boss about Steve's attitude and he is fired. When it is discovered someone has been tampering with Tam and Steve's mail, Marty and Brains fix the letterbox so no one can open it — no one. The kids present Miranda and her mother with the money for the new dress and make their apologies. Sally brings Tam and Steve a letter from their father that was slipped under their door — it contains $300 and a note asking them to give up on him. Tam's efforts to get Carol and Vinnie together do not go well and Carol is humiliated by the reaction to her arrival at the party and runs out. Tam goes after her but is stopped by Javorsky and Mrs Kilsyth who accuses her of stealing a brooch from her home.

Finders Keepers, Losers Weepers

After being questioned by Javorsky about the stolen brooch, Tam and Carol question Sally who adamantly denies taking it and runs off. Hiding out at the fort, Sally watches as a hooded figure arrives and hides the brooch. She follows the person back to their home and discovers it is Miranda. With the brooch now hidden at the gang's hangout, Miranda convinces her mother to call the police again. Javorsky searches the fort and is met by Sally and Tam who turn over the brooch. Javorsky returns to Mrs Kilsyth and tells her he didn't find anything at the fort and asks her to come back to the station to fill out some paperwork. Left alone, Miranda returns to the fort to retrieve the brooch but her mother, Javorsky, Tam and Carol are all waiting. Meanwhile, Brains' birthday is approaching and seeing his father go into the bike shop can only mean one thing. Steve is threatened by Spider not to involve the police in the search for his father.

Steve goes in search of Wal believing he can track him from the letter. The kids get Brains a flag for his expected bike and when Brains brings the gang back to his house for the party, his parents surprise him with a new... badminton set. Disappointed at not receiving a new bike, Brains falls victim to a scheme by the BRown Street BOys and agrees to Vinnie's offer to sell him a bike for $20. Brains hands over the money only to learn his new bike is a rusty old heap that falls apart when he rides it. Tam is not impressed and demands Vinnie return the money, threatening to go to the police. Marty's sports-hero father becomes the school team's new trainer. It is the worst possible news for reluctant athlete Marty who is out of his element during the big footie match and disappoints his father. Steve returns having had no luck in finding Wal and tells Tam they must face the possibility that they might never see him again. Vinnie surprised Tam by telling her he wants her to be his girlfriend.

Tam tells Vinnie she wants nothing to do with him but he's not prepared to give up — they're inevitable. Steve catches a fish — and a job when he helps out a fisherman at the docks. Despite a disastrous first day on the job, he's given a second chance. However, he sows the seeds of trouble when he teases Sally with stories of sea monsters in the bay. Carol is excited by Vinnie's sudden interest in her unaware he's only using her to learn more about Tam. Marty becomes the Brown Street Boys' newest target for ridicule. Unfortunately, his sense of humour returns a the worst possible time and Brains makes things worse, telling Vinnie that Marty has been bragging he can take Vinnie in a fight. To save Marty, Tam agrees to go out with Vinnie.

With the youth centre in danger of closing, Helen comes up with the idea of holding a benefit concert. Steve breaks a promise to take Sally out on the fishing boat so she follows him to work and stows away. When Tam tries to convince Carol she's not interested in Vinnie, Carol asks her to call off their date. Tam goes to see Vinnie and gets a look at his home life. She encourages him to work for a better life if it's what he wants and comes away actually liking him. The surprise of finding Sally on the boat is short lived when Steve's boss collapses leaving Steve and Sally alone in a boat drifting out to sea. As Helen, Tam and their friends are gathered at the wharf waiting for news from the searchers, word arrives that Steve and Sally have been found — saved by a real life 'sea monster'. Meanwhile, Vinnie has found a job working for Harry and tells Tam he can help investigate Harry to find out why Wal left.

Journey Into The Unknown

Vinnie calls off the Brown Street Boys when they hassle Brains and Marty at school. After Carol tells them it is because Vinnie and Tam are an item, the boys decide to flaunt their new 'protected status' by venturing into Brown Street Boys territory. Encouraged by Helen to make an effort to be friends with Vinnie, Steve invites him over for a barbecue. Tam doesn't like the idea and events are further complicated with Carol coming too. While working for Harry, Vinnie overhears him talking to Spider about a mysterious weekend job. The kids decide to keep watch on Harry's yard to learn more. While taking their shift, Tam and Brains jump into the back of one of Harry's truck as it drives off.

When the truck finally stops, Tam and Brains find themselves in the middle of the bush. Tam explores the nearby house and observes Harry talking to another man, to whom he exclaims that they are both at risk with Wal on the loose. Separated from Brains, Tam runs into a fierce dog — and its gun-wielding owner. The woman takes Tam back to her house and tells her all about the people who come at night and poison the water, killing the trees and birds. Brains makes his own way to the house and the next morning he and Tam take the train back into town. Vinnie is able to examine Harry's truck when it returns and notes that it is empty but stinks. Later, while at a pet store with Tam, Vinnie recognises the smell from the truck and wonders if Harry is smuggling birds. Meanwhile, Mick questions Vinnie's loyalty to the Brown Street Boys and tells him he's been voted out of the gang. Helen tells the kids to come up with their own idea for the show if they don't like hers.

You Can't Trust Anybody

The kids believe Harry is smuggling native birds but decide they need more evidence before they can go to the police. Sally is conflicted about keeping quiet and lets things slip to Javorsky who takes her and Brains up into the hills to look for the woman's house. Helen asks Vinnie to drum up enthusiasm for the show at school but volunteers are few. When he approaches members of the Brown Street Boys to participate, Mick stands up to him not wanting Vinnie telling the Boys what to do and Vinnie uncharacteristically backs down. An anonymous poet submits their work for the show and Marty thinks its Miranda after he sees her reading poetry at school. Dismissed from work early, Vinnie hangs around the yard and sees Spider loading an aqualung. He suspects something is happening at the wharf and asks Steve to keep an eye out. The pair then see Spider making a delivery to a fisherman.

Steve and Tam are discouraged to discover the package is just an ice-cream cake but Vinnie is convinced they are on to something. Tam reads the mysterious poems to the group at the youth centre and the reluctant author is revealed — it's Carol. Helen recommends she put them to music and suggests she show them to Miranda. Tam takes up the task and arrives at Miranda's house as her piano recital is in progress with a special guest from the conservatorium — Trevor Cathcart, Tam's friend from Haven Bay! The drastically changed Trevor agrees to look at the poems and Miranda agrees to be in the show as well. To celebrate his first pay packet, Vinnie asks Tam on a date to the city to see a movie. With Harry and Spider away, Vinnie wants to take the opportunity to snoop around. Sally wants to join in but is caught when Harry and Spider return. Vinnie is upset at Sally for almost blowing things but she has learned about a meeting that night. Vinnie returns to the yard at night with Marty and jumps onto the back of a truck. Arriving at the youth centre, Vinnie looks on as the truck is met by Ellis — the youth centre's cleaner.

Heads You Lose

Vinnie stops in to tell Tam and Steve that Ellis is Harry's boss and they're moving another shipment of birds. The three go back to the youth centre and sneak into the building's loading bay but it is empty. It is decided that Ellis' storage room is the next likely location for the birds but Tam and Carol discover that it too is empty — save for a bad smell and some feathers. Tam and Carol are caught by Ellis but when Ron arrives, Ellis locks them all inside before running off. Brains and Marty give pursuit but Ellis gets away. The kids tell Ron everything and he decides to call the police and asks kids to stay out of things so as to not interfere with the investigation. Ron opens up the old theatre space for Helen and the kids to use for the show. Marty mocks Miranda's audition and she quits. Vinnie and Tam go into the city for their date but they run into Mick and the Brown Street Boys at the movie theatre. Mick draws Vinnie into a fight and they're all thrown out. Steve wins a new computer after entering a program in contest.

To cheer up Tam after her date with Vinnie, Steve suggests they throw a party. Vinnie apologises to Tam for getting into the fight and asks her out on another date. Tam agrees to go to Vinnie's family party on the condition he comes to the one Steve is having. At Steve's party, Tam introduces Carol to Trevor. The pair work on the music for her poems but she doesn't take kindly to his suggested changes. Steve's ex-coworker Tania invites him to dinner. Vinnie copies a suspicious note he finds in Harry's office. Tania asks Steve to help her debug a computer program for work but when her not-so-ex-boyfriend Nick shows up it becomes clear Tania's only using Steve to help Nick keep his job. Feeling bad for brushing off a job for Helen to go out with Tania, Steve stops by to help her. He recognises the shipping information she is working on from the note Vinnie found in Harry's office. Steve finally thinks they have enough to go to the police but when they go to Harry's lot, it is empty — all traces of the business are gone.

Run For Your Life

With Harry's business gone, Tam is at a loss for what to do next but Steve reminds her they still have the shipping list — they will find their father, no matter how long it takes. Mick and Vinnie get into a fight after Mick interrupts the show rehearsal to drag out the other Brown Street Boys. Trevor asks Carol out on a date to see a classical music concert under the guide of doing 'research' for their song writing. The date doesn't end well with Carol concluding she doesn't fit in with Trevor and his friends. Boyd tries to interest the kids in the upcoming inter-school sports. Short a 10k cross country runner, Brains volunteers Marty who is tired of being the 'loser of the family'. Tam questions Vinnie's commitment when she discovers graffiti proclaiming 'Trudie J loves Vinnie C'. Recognising they have a mutual enemy in Tam, Mick recruits Miranda.

Trevor apologises to Carol for his behaviour on their date. Mick asks Tam to meet him in private so he can read her the poems he's written for the show. While Mick keeps Tam busy listening to his bad poetry, Miranda tells Vinnie that Tam is seeing another guy and shows him Tam and Mick talking. Seeing them hug proves everything Miranda said. Brains puts Marty through his paces in advance of the race but Boyd takes over when Marty shows promise. Marty gets gun-shy when his father shows up to watch the race but performs well. Despite not winning the race, placing third, Marty earns his father's praise. At rehearsal, Tam is shocked to see Vinnie show up with his arm around Miranda — they're going on a date. Having cracked the code, Steve stakes out the wharf and sees Ellis helping Spider out of scuba gear — they are transporting the birds to the ship. underwater.

Episode 2.11

Steve wants to located Harry's new base of operations but getting Vinnie's help may be problematic given his falling out with Tam. Marty and Brains, and everyone else at school, are puzzled by the sudden closeness of Miranda and Vinnie. Vinnie pulls the Brown Street Boys out of the show after a fight with Tam which leaves her even more confused about Vinnie's behaviour. Sally offers to help her get answers, and in the meantime, gets Steve and Ahn back together. Trevor's grandmother comes to the youth centre to inform Helen that he will no longer be available for the concert. Trevor is not at all happy to learn this and tells his grandmother has no intention of dropping out. Sally overhears Mick and Miranda scheming and uses the theatre's PA system to record their conversation. Sally then assembles everyone and plays back the recording, exposing Mick and Miranda's efforts to break up Vinnie and Tam. Vinnie apologises to Tam and promises to apologise to Helen and get the Brown Street Boys back in the show. Miranda tries to apologise to Tam but she refuses to believe she in sincere. Miranda tries to explain her behaviour saying no one ever gave her a chance to fit in but Tam responds that Miranda needs to come down off her high horse if she ever hopes to have friends in Westport.

Steve questions two divers at the wharf hoping to learn where Spider gets his air tanks filled. Armed with a list of nearby dive shops, Steve recruits Marty, Brains and Vinnie to search them out. Having stood up to his grandmother, Trevor invites Carol home for dinner. Carol is not at all who she was expecting and Trevor once again stands up his grandmother, this time to defend Carol whom he says is going to be his new girlfriend. Miranda turns over a new leaf, pitching in at the youth centre. Steve and Vinnie locate Spider's air tank at a dive shop. When Spider returns to pick it up, Brains, Vinnie, Tam and Mick follow him in a cab. Arriving at a warehouse, the kids sneak in and overhear Harry and Spider discussing plans for one last big job. The kids are spotted and all but Marty are able to climb a rope ladder up to roof to escape. Too Scared, Marty turns back narrowly manages to escape via another route. With the kids thinking the job is for "next thursday night", Harry gets word it's actually been scheduled for that night. Steve comes home to find the kettle on — Wal's back.

Wal explains to Steve that he was threatened by Harry after he started asking questions about what he was hauling and had to disappear so the gang Harry was working with would know he hadn't gone to the police. Ron interrupts preparations for the show to announce that the theatre has to be closed pending a council safety inspection. Everyone is sent home but Tam returns to the theatre when she realises she left a brooch behind. Sneaking in to the closed building, Tam discovers a shipment of birds in loading bay and is caught by Ellis, Spider, and their boss — Ron. Back at the Henderson home, Wal is surprised by how much Steve knows about what's been going on but warns him that he's in over his head — Harry may be smuggling birds but they are bring drugs back. Tam's failure to return home raises concerns sending Marty and Brains to the theatre. Marty faces his fear of heights to climb a ladder and peak in skylight and he sees Tam tied up. Brains goes for help and Wal calls the police. Not content to wait, Steve and the others go on their own. Marty stops Ron from drugging Tam and the rest of the kids burst into the theatre and apprehend Harry, Ron and Ellis. Wal arrives to greet Tam for the first time since his return but the police have questions for Wal and take him away for questioning. Helen is worried the future of the youth centre will be at risk when news of the bust gets out. Wal is released by the police who have insufficient evidence against him and Wal promises to Tam he'll never go away again.

Miranda's mother leads the charge to close down the youth centre but the kids voice their support to keep it open. Steve tells Wal about the work he's lined up interstate (fruit picking up north, mustering in the outback) which he has decided to turn down but Wal encourages him to go. Steve explains his decision to Tam who's upset at losing him. The kids are not interested in rehearing if show to be cancelled but Helen arrives with good news — the show is on. The Federal Police want to question Wal and Tam's mention of Harry's involvement results in them both being taken in for questioning. The Westport Show is a huge success with Tam and Carol's performance of Carol's sand Trevor song the highlight of the evening. Wal arrives late but has important news — he's been cleared and Harry has admitted everything. Helen announces that the youth centre will remain open, Steve reveals he is leaving Westport for a new job, and Tam hails Marty's heroic actions.
