In Ashford, North Queensland, residents of the town gather at the local high school to unearth a time capsule, which was interred by students from the ‘class of 94’. Among the items of 90’s nostalgia is a letter from Isabel Baker, who was murdered just a week before the time capsule was buried. Isabel’s letter — and the contents of the time capsule — shed new light on her unsolved murder case. It suddenly seems that the killer is someone from Ashford. The investigation is reopened; and Detective Sergeant James Cormack, from the State Cold Case Unit, arrives in Ashford to begin the search for Isabel’s killer.

After the discovery of Isabel’s hair those involved with the time capsule project in 1994 are at the forefront of Cormack’s investigation. He makes a huge discovery when the blue car seen following Isabel on the night of the murder shows up on the time capsule documentary — he now has a number plate. Hazel is grappling with how much to trust Cormack and if she should help him with the investigation, or put up walls to protect her family. But Hazel is harbouring a secret of her own from the past that threatens to resurface.

Rumours and gossip are spreading around Ashford and suspicion is cast over Joe. Cormack continues to interview the ‘time capsule kids’ and more secrets rise to the surface; Chloe is lying, Hector has no alibi, and Tasha claims Isabel was dating an older Islander man in the weeks before her murder. Cormack tracks down the owner of the blue car, Ezekiel, who has since died. He discovers that Ezekiel’s cousins went missing in Ashford around the time of Isabel’s murder — could these ‘lost boys’ be connected to the case?

Cormack investigates the link between Ezekiel’s missing cousins — the lost boys — and Isabel’s murder. He probes Joe about his connection to Ezekiel, but Joe refuses to cooperate. Billy Hopkins claims to have evidence implicating Steve Walcott in the crime and he tries to blackmail Chloe and Steve with it. The Walcott’s dismiss him, so Billy arranges to meet Cormack to share his evidence. But Billy never makes the meeting, dying in suspicious circumstances — was he killed to stop the evidence coming out?

Billy Hopkins’ dies in a motorbike crash just hours before he was due to meet with Cormack. Turner concludes it was an accident, but Cormack suspects foul play. He is starting to think that Billy’s death, the missing workers and Isabel’s murder could all be connected. All signs are pointing to a cover up of illegal labour practices by the mill. He starts zeroing in on Steve Walcott. But after Cormack discovers Isabel’s formal shoes out at Dalkeith the case takes another twist and the spotlight shines on a new suspect.

Cormack tries to track Anton down to question him, but he’s disappeared. When Cormack and Hazel discover that Kalana is also missing, they fear the worst. Cormack and Hazel work together and decipher where Kalana was taken — which is the same place Cormack now believes Isabel was killed. They race deep into the cane fields to find Kalana and confront Anton. But when they get there they discover there is one final twist to this tale...
