All Saints star Emmett in new battle against cancer

The actress Belinda Emmett announced yesterday that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer again, three years after recovering from the disease.

In a statement released through her manager, Mr Mark Morrissey, the 27-year-old star of the medical drama All Saints said the new cancer was detected last week.

The statement went on to thank fans for their support at "a very challenging time for Belinda, her friends and family", and her boyfriend, television personality Rove McManus, asked people to respect their need for privacy.

Emmett completed shooting her last episode of All Saints for the year on July 31, which will go to air on October 9.

A spokesman for Channel 7 said her character had "gone backpacking", and was not due to reappear on screens until February 2002. It was too early to say when the actress would return to the show.

Emmett has been shooting a film, The Nugget, in Mudgee, and is thought to have decided to complete her filming commitments, despite her illness.

In 1998, Emmett was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent surgery to have a malignant tumour removed.

Mr Morrissey said the actress would be treated in Sydney and was "strong and positive" about her condition. "That's the way Belinda is," he said. "She will face this and deal with it."
